Apprenticeships - what next?

By , Wednesday 16 December 2015

Following the announcement of the Apprenticeship levy rate and the Apprenticeship Institute in the Autumn Statement, the government has outlined further detail on the Apprenticeship reforms and their vision for Apprenticeships going forward. The paper, entitled “English Apprenticeships: Our 2020 Vision”, explores how the government intends to improve recognition and quality of Apprenticeship programmes, give employers more power in shaping Apprenticeships and the state of funding for Apprenticeships. The key points highlighted in the Executive Summary are the intentions for Apprenticeships to provide “substantive training in a professional or technical route” with a strong focus on key English and maths skills, and the availability of Apprenticeships at all levels, up to and including degree level, as well as across all sectors. It’s expected the amount of Higher Apprenticeships – those at a degree level – will increase and become more widely available. This is good news in the light of recent research that showed learners who undertake Higher Apprenticeships earn more than university graduates.

More vocational reforms?

By , Thursday 19 November 2015

Skills Minister Nick Boles has recently announced that the government will be making “ground breaking changes to technical and professional education.” Many believe the upcoming changes are a continuation of the reforms brought on by the 2011 Wolf report, which sought to remove “3000 worthless courses”. The aim is understood to be to simplify the vocational education system and bring its reputation in line with university and higher education.

Learners who take Higher Apprenticeships earn more than university graduates

By David Grailey, Chief Executive, Thursday 22 October 2015

A recent study has shown that learners who have taken Higher Apprenticeships earn more than university graduates. The research published by The Sutton Trust shows that the lifetime earnings of those who had undertaken a Higher Apprenticeship outstrips the money earned by university graduates. Former apprentices can earn around £100,000 more than their university counterparts over a lifetime by taking an Apprenticeship at level 5.

Tackling the skills gap

By , Tuesday 22 September 2015

It was recently announced that most graduates are in non-graduate jobs, a statistic that has raised further awareness of the skills gap crisis the UK is facing. Many recent reports have backed this up; a Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) study showed the UK has the worst-equipped school leavers when it comes to essential employment skills, particularly in regards to careers in business.

Transitioning from school to FE

By , Friday 11 September 2015

As the new academic year begins, you’ll have a new influx of fresh-faced school leavers embarking on the next stage not only of their education, but also of their life. College is going to be completely new to these learners, so how can you support them in making the successful transition from school to Further Education? Whether your new learners are taking A Levels, a Traineeship, an Apprenticeship, or another vocational option, it’s important to understand what their aims and ambitions are. However, many young people are still confused about what they want to do after leaving education, and it’s vital they’re supported with making that choice throughout their education.

NCFE has welcomed the government’s decision to approve one of the Apprenticeship standards submitted by the Supply Chain Trailblazer group, for which NCFE is the chosen awarding organisation partner. Prime Minister David Cameron recently confirmed radical plans to increase the number of quality trailblazer Apprenticeships across the country – forming part of the government’s pledge to support 3 million Apprenticeships by 2020 – placing ownership of the skills and knowledge required to perform key roles within industry firmly in the hands of the employers.

A-Level results day - what's next?

By , Thursday 13 August 2015

It’s A Level results day and as we speak, thousands of young people around the UK are either celebrating top grades or commiserating over unexpected or disappointing results. This year, the proportion of top A Level grades has fallen marginally, with A* and A grades being awarded to 25.9% of entries, down from 26% last year. However, passes have risen by 0.1 percentage point in a year of “stable” results. Meanwhile, record numbers of young people have been accepted onto university courses according to Ucas.

VQ Day 2015

By David Grailey, Chief Executive, Wednesday 10 June 2015

Today (10 June) we’ll be celebrating the eighth annual VQ Day (Vocational Qualification Day), which highlights vocational achievement and the many benefits of practical and vocational learning. Here at NCFE we’re strong supporters of VQ Day, because it provides a platform to give vocational learning – which has long been a robust alternative option to traditional academia for many learners – the recognition it deserves in the education sector.
