As the Eurozone economy continues to stumble on, with youth unemployment rates in some countries reaching 50% and bank bailouts becoming the norm, the need to focus on equipping young people with the skills they need to secure employment is becoming more important every day.

As highlighted in the media, young people are finding it increasingly difficult to get a job because they’ve not had the opportunity to acquire the skills and experience needed.

The Government is looking to apprenticeships as a solution to this problem; a route to help young people gain real workplace experience and a solid skillset in a specialist area. They have recently shown their support with plans to increase apprenticeship funding. For 19+ learners, this will mean an increase of 3% over the next 2 years while funding for 16-19 year olds will see an increase of 6.9% for 2012-2013.

Another indication of Government support for the sector came with the launch of The Richard Review of Apprenticeships.  The review, found here, is led by entrepreneur and founder of School for Startups, Doug Richards, and takes a medium-long term look at the future of apprenticeships in England.

We’d like to know your views…. Are apprenticeships the answer? Can they meet the needs of a changing economy? How can we ensure that apprenticeships deliver high quality training whilst maximising the impact of Government investment?
