With just 2 months to go until the switch from Key Skills to Functional Skills, many of you will be taking steps in preparation for this important transition - putting delivery models and policies in place, contextualising Functional Skills to different sector areas, thinking about learner activities, assessment, teaching and learning methods.

As Functional Skills are the words on everyone’s lips, it seems fitting that the Skills Funding Agency (SFA) has recently announced the rates for Functional Skills in the new streamlined funding system for adult learning.

The new simplified funding system for adult skills will be introduced in the 2013/14 academic year, with shadow working available from September. English and Maths qualifications will be funded at a base rate of £336, equivalent to 5-12 credits in the Government’s new “learning aim rates matrix” but a 1.3 Programme Weighting Factor will boost the amount for Entry Level Maths to £437.

The Skills Funding Agency had worked closely with the FE sector to agree the rates which are based on existing funding data to minimise disruption and allow teachers to focus on teaching.

The SFA has said that more details would be published later this summer once the extra funding had been tested and consulted on. You can read more details about the funding for Functional Skills in the article here and find out more about NCFE’s offer here

So what do you think of the funding rates? Is this data representative of the delivery requirements for Functional Skills? What’s more, how are you finding the transition from Key Skills to Functional Skills? What are the challenges that you’re facing and what support is needed?
