Students to rate colleges online

Further education students are being invited to rate their college on a new website, ‘Learner View’, run by education watchdog Ofsted. The questionnaire particularly focuses on how well college courses prepare students for their next steps in work or study.

The initiative stems from Ofsted’s Skills for Employment report, which suggested that some college courses aren’t challenging enough and are too focused on the achievement of qualifications rather than providing learners with job specific skills.

At NCFE, we know that many of our FE customers are highly committed to preparing students for the labour market and deliver a range of employability related qualifications. For example, NCFE’s popular suite of qualifications in Job Search and Interview Skills, developed in partnership with REED, are designed to equip learners with the mindset and skills they need to find and secure the right job for them.

So what do you think of students rating their college? If properly managed, will it prove to be a useful source of feedback? Is it important to give students a voice to evaluate their learning? Or alternatively, will the site invite criticism? How can Ofsted ensure the validity of the concerns expressed? Do you already have a system in place for capturing the student experience, at your college?
