At some point in their employment, most teachers have been asked by pupils for a degree of careers guidance – what qualifications they need to get where they want to be, what training they should undertake and what skills are required.

Now, the Government’s Information Advice and Guidance (IAG) strategy places schools at the heart of this process.

At the Conservative Party Conference this month, it was highlighted that with the raising of the participation age, it’s now more important than ever for young people to know about the different learning routes available to them. This includes Diplomas, Apprenticeships and vocational qualifications as well as the traditional academic routes.

Having the opportunity to talk through the different options means it is less daunting for pupils making important choices which affect their futures. The strategy also helps parents to become better informed when they are advising and influencing their children.

The right IAG can really help to guide young people to achieve their aspirations. What’s more, from this September, a school’s IAG will be assessed by Ofsted in terms of the extent to which the school has developed and implemented a strategy for ensuring that all pupils in Years 8 to 13 receive effective careers guidance

At NCFE, we understand that it can be difficult for teachers to provide this kind personalised, impartial careers advice, without any training, and in addition to everything else.  We offer a number of qualifications that can support your careers advice delivery and evidence this. For example, our qualifications developed in conjunction with Reed recruitment in CV Writing Skills and Job Search and Interview Skills / Job Search and Employability Skills can help schools to give structure to their IAG programme.

What do you think? Are these types of qualifications crucial to helping your pupils succeed?
