As we approach 2015’s General Election, ‘Apprenticeships’ is the hot topic that binds all 3 of the big political parties. However, Ofsted FE and Skills Director Lorna Fitzjohn has recently spoken out about young people not being well advised on the benefits of apprenticeships when at school, resulting in the number of apprenticeship starts among young people ‘flatlining’.

She claims that careers advice in schools mainly focuses on A-Levels as the preferred option for teenagers due to a lack of understanding in schools about work-based training.

The benefits of an apprenticeship to learners are clear; the ability to earn whilst you learn, achieving meaningful qualifications, gaining experience and fulfilling your potential. Best of all, an apprenticeship can offer up a real future; after finishing, the majority of apprentices (85%) will stay in employment.

Not all young people are suited to the typical academic route and many learn more effectively through practical learning in a hands-on environment.  When it comes to education, one size doesn’t fit all and it’s important to ensure that young people are given the opportunity to carefully choose the right career path for them having considered all options.

NCFE offers a wide range of part and full Intermediate and Advanced Apprenticeships in a variety of sector areas. We also offer a number of ‘progression to apprenticeship’ qualifications which can help learners in schools to develop the vital skills they need to give them a head start on their post-16 programme of learning.
