It’s been reported that A-levels and GCSEs in arts subjects in England, including music, drama, art and dance, are set to be made more "rigorous and demanding". The tougher exams will come into play from September 2016 as part of the Government's programme of exam reform.

GCSEs in history, geography, sciences and modern languages are also being revised to bring them into line with English literature, English language and maths.

There will be a shift from modules to exams and also a new grading system which ranges from 9 to 1, with the highest grade likely to be twice as hard as an A*.

Michael Gove, Education Secretary, said of the changes, "I am passionate about great art, drama, dance, music and design, and I am determined to ensure every child enjoys access to the best in our culture. I also want all schools to be able to nurture creative talent in every child.”

NCFE shares the Education Secretary’s passion for offering young people the opportunity to explore their creative talents and potential. That’s why we offer rigorous GCSE equivalent qualifications in Creative Studies (covering areas such as art and design, graphic design, interactive media, music technology, performance skills). These V Certs help with pupil engagement and offer hands on, practical learning opportunities.

What do you think? How important is creative education for our young people? Is it the right thing to make these qualifications more difficult to achieve in order to maintain quality? Do you think that rigorous qualifications such as NCFE’s V Certs are a viable alternative to these GCSEs?
