A call to action over diversity

Campaigners working to address the lack of diversity in children’s books have taken their fight online to help raise awareness of equality and diversity issues.

The social media campaign, led by a group of authors including Ellen Oh, Aisha Saeed and Chelsea Pitcher, has been launched with a public “call to action”, encouraging people to go online to support the push for great diversity in children’s literature.

The campaign was launched shortly after a US study was published showing that of 3,200 children's books published in 2013, only 93 were about black people, 34 about Native Americans, 69 about Asians and 57 about Latinos.

The campaign highlights the broader role equality and diversity awareness plays in the development of society as a whole. As we live in an increasingly multicultural environment, and our workplaces and classrooms become ever more richly diverse, it has never been more important to understand the issues surrounding equality and diversity.

It’s our grasp of these issues that dictates every interaction we have, both personally and professionally. As a result, it’s now essential that young and adult learners are given greater opportunity to develop their understanding of equality and diversity issues in order to improve their chances of life progression.

NCFE offers a suite of Equality and Diversity qualifications suitable for both young and adult learners, including those in or seeking employment. They’re also ideal for those who need to develop an awareness of issues surrounding equality and diversity, for example as part of an induction programme or personal development.

Equality and Diversity Qualification Update

  • NCFE Level 2 Award in Equality and Diversity (500/8314/4)
  • NCFE Level 2 Certificate in Equality and Diversity (500/8342/9).

We’ve recently restructured the NCFE Equality and Diversity qualifications listed above to bring them up to date with current legislation and to address feedback we’ve had from our centres on what you want from the suite.

The current qualifications will still be available for registrations until at least the end of this session, so you’ll still be able to register any existing learners on them for now. You can sign up to receive updates on the progress of these qualifications.

The new redeveloped versions are now available for learner registrations. The new qualification numbers are:

  • NCFE Level 2 Award in Equality and Diversity (601/3144/5)
  • NCFE Level 2 Certificate in Equality and Diversity (601/3145/7).
