So the big day has arrived and the result is…. that the overall pass rate is down for the first time in 30 years.  However, the percentage of A* grades awarded has risen from 7.6% to 8.2%.

Despite this, there are a record number of university places available and students could still get places at their chosen university, even if they have not achieved the required grades.

The UCAS admissions service says that so far 396,990 students have been accepted on degree courses at UK universities - up 3% compared with this point last year. Overall, it is expected that for the first time over 500,000 places will be allocated for courses this autumn.

Education Secretary Nicky Morgan has commented that the government is "lifting the cap on aspiration" whilst Universities Minister Greg Clark says the expansion in places is an "important source of social mobility".

It may be the case that universities are actively competing to attract students, bearing in mind that nearly half of students now consider apprenticeships instead of university with 40% of London teenagers commenting that they were tempted by the opportunity to “earn while you learn”.
