Today, Ofqual released their report following the thematic review of Functional Skills qualifications. The report sets out Ofqual’s conclusion that ‘aspects’ of the qualifications need to be improved. The “improvements that each awarding organisation has been asked to make are specific to that awarding organisation and its qualifications.”

Overall, there are 4 key areas in which awarding organisations are now looking to make changes:

  • improving the quality of assessment materials
  • reducing the risk of malpractice and maladministration
  • strengthening standard-setting procedures
  • evaluating how well qualifications meet user needs.

At NCFE, we welcome improvements to the quality of these worthwhile qualifications to ensure they are given the recognition they deserve. Functional Skills give learners the chance to gain useful, transferable skills which helps them to function confidently and apply these skills in a practical way. Therefore, it’s vital that these qualifications are as relevant and consistent as possible.

NCFE offers a range of Functional Skills qualifications that are ideal for building learners’ essential skills which are needed in every workplace. These qualifications are online, on demand and supported by exceptional customer service.

What do you think about Functional Skills and the results of the review?
