Last month the Education committee published the report on PSHE and SRE in schools.

Describing the government’s strategy for improving education in this area as weak and as a mismatch between rhetoric and the actual steps that have been taken to improve education in this area, the report didn’t exactly hold back.

The report outlines some key points on the issues of PSHE in schools. One point is the need for PSHE to have statutory status in schools. Indeed with PSHE requiring improvement in 40% of all schools there is a strong case for this.

Launching the report, Graham Stuart, Chair of Education Committee, said:

"There is an overwhelming demand for statutory sex and relationships education - from teachers, parents and young people themselves. It’s important that school leaders and governors take PSHE seriously and improve their provision by investing in training for teachers and putting PSHE lessons on the school timetable. Statutory status will help ensure all of this happens.”

Crucially, the report summary underlines the need for schools to find curriculum time to teach PSHE and SRE.

It’s easy to see the case for statutory teaching. But quantity is not the only key message in the report and funding for CPD among other things is highlighted as a way to ensure quality within school PSHE teaching.

Indeed many of the schools we work with find our range of awareness qualifications a great way to support their wider approach to PSHE. Covering subjects such as Sexual and Mental Health Awareness, the qualifications can be run in a number of ways. What’s more, their short portfolio based nature means they are ideal for fitting around existing curriculum plans.
