With the General Election rapidly approaching, there is more discussion than ever on further education and various pledges from the main political parties on Apprenticeships.

We wanted to find out what young people around the country think of their post-school options as they prepare to cast their vote, which will be the first time for many of them.

Our survey targeted 1000 18-24 year olds, generating some interesting results. It’s clear there is still pressure on students to go to university, and a knowledge gap around other options has led to few considering Apprenticeships. This could prove problematic for the main parties, who have announced ambitious plans to tackle youth unemployment through Apprenticeships.

As a provider of over 300 vocational qualifications and apprenticeship courses, we at NCFE see first-hand the benefits Apprenticeships bring to both young people looking to succeed in the workplace and also to employers, so we were concerned to find that a large proportion of school leavers are not being made fully aware about the routes available to them. We therefore urge the future government to do more to support schools in properly informing students of the benefits of all forms of further education and vocational training, and the career paths that can follow.

The below infographic we’ve put together highlights the key findings of our survey:

Are you surprised by the survey results or, if you’re between the ages of 18 and 24, do you agree or disagree? We’d love to hear your thoughts – feel free to either comment below or tweet us @NCFE.
