The power of social media in today’s world cannot be underestimated.

Social media is a tool used by people of all ages, but it’s something that young people especially have adopted and use day-to-day, around the clock.

10 years ago, communication for young people was fairly limited to a small circle of friends, most likely within their school or local area. Now young people can communicate with their peers from around the globe by using their smartphones, tablets and computers.

When I completed my end of school exams 10 years ago, I remember discussing the difficulty of them afterwards with fellow pupils and speaking to teachers about what topics had come up, and it ended there, until results day! But that’s not the case in 2015, which we saw at the start of the month when pupils all around the country were using social media to express their thoughts on how their end-of-year GCSE maths exam went.

The discussion ended up trending on Twitter and the subject has been tweeted about thousands of times, showcasing the power of social media and how the world’s changing.

Due to the power of social media, and the number of social media-specific jobs now available, we’ve created social media qualifications. Learners can understand social media use in businesses, how it can be used effectively and how to use their knowledge to achieve results from social media. Social media qualifications can also form part of a Study Programme – we have a wide range of Creative Media pathways, as well as other subject areas such as business, photography, sport and uniformed services.

Find out more about the Study Programme, and what we can offer you.

What do you think about the power of social media? Is it something your centre is aware of? Are you using social media to your advantage?
