The Department of Education announced this month that Amanda Spielman will take over from Sir Michael Wilshaw as Ofsted’s chief inspector at the end of the year.

Ms Spielman comes with a wealth of experience in the sector, as chair of Ofqual and also Education Advisor of Ark. Nicky Morgan, Education Secretary, described her as “uniquely qualified to take up this important role” and “the right person to improve the quality and consistency of Ofsted’s inspections.”

Rebecca Allen, the Head of the Education Datalab research unit, commented on the appointment, “Amanda has a very analytical and evidence-based approach to making decisions, which will turn Ofsted into a more conventional regulator.”

However, the appointment has attracted concerns from teaching unions around her lack of experience in the actual classroom and therefore the challenge of being able to empathise with teaching staff.

What do you think of the decision? Is Ms Spielman the right person for the role?
