Performance tables: better late than never.

The release of the long awaited Department of Education (DfE) performance tables for 2019 has been a mixed bag of both relief and frustration.

Having waited since November 2016, we were pleased to have confirmation from the DfE that a number of our qualifications are already appearing on the tables. However, it’s frustrating that there’s been an added wait for qualifications that will appear on the next list yet to be released (expected this month).

Why the further delay? Ongoing reforms mean that the DfE is interrogating qualifications for approval on the performance tables even more than usual as it introduces more stringent guidance for technical qualifications. A lack of resources could also be a factor in the lag time for approving qualifications, as civil servants are under pressure to deliver changes across all areas the education and skills system. We’re eagerly awaiting the March release, and will of course let you know as soon as our qualifications appear on this list. 

This month has also seen the very welcome announcement by Education Secretary Justine Greening that Sex and Relationships Education (SRE) will be placed on a ‘statutory footing’ for all secondary school pupils. Schoolchildren will be taught about safe relationships from primary school onwards, and will build on their knowledge throughout their compulsory education.

This move by the Education Secretary has been welcomed, as it endeavours to empower young learners with the tools they need to protect themselves in an increasingly complicated social environment, and make informed decisions about their own wellbeing.
