We were very pleased to hear that the Department for Education (DfE) has confirmed the initial outcome of the Applied General Review is that this category of qualification will remain.

It was announced that the DfE will work with Ofqual going forward, to ensure Applied General qualifications are robust in providing appropriate skills and knowledge. The DfE will be retaining Applied Generals in official performance tables.

We welcome this decision – it’s good news for the sector and for learners. As Catherine Sezen, Senior Policy Manager for 14-19 and Curriculum at the Association of Colleges, said, Applied Generals allow for a broader range of study of a particular subject, and these qualifications are vital in improving social mobility and raising young people’s aspirations.

They’re a vital alternative to A Levels and the new T Levels, offering a balanced curriculum choice for learners and an alternative route into higher education. This news also offers some much-needed stability, as almost all other qualifications have been significantly changed or replaced.

It’s important that the value of these qualifications continues to be recognised, and that their content provides the appropriate skills and knowledge.

In line with this, NCFE currently has several Applied Generals ready to go live and in development. The Level 3 Applied General Certificate in Music Technology is already live; the Level 3 Applied General Certificate in Art and Design will go live on 1 September 2017; and the Level 3 Applied General Certificate in Business and Enterprise is under review by the DfE and is due to go live on 1 September 2017.

We’re also developing a Level 3 Applied General Certificate in Health and Social Care and Level 3 Applied General Certificate in Sports Science, with a planned go live date of September 2018. We’ll be sure to keep you updated on all of our qualifications in this category.
